Craig Heap with Glen Wharton

What an amazing Christmas we’ve had at Durham City Gymnastics Club.  On Saturday 17th December Olympian Craig Heap officially opened the centre followed by our Christmas displays which showcased the talent and enthusiasm of our gymnasts.

The gymnasts from the youngest to the oldest, from beginner to International medal winners took part in a series highly entertaining displays of their skills.  The most senior members wowed us with their gravity-defying tumbling feats whilst our younger members entertained us with their gymnastics skills accompanied by some memorable Christmas numbers.

The audience clapped and cheered, ‘oohed’ and ‘aahed’, and you could tell from their enthusiasm and the smiles on their faces that the gymnasts thoroughly enjoyed this chance to show friends, family and supporters what they could do.

As head coach Glen Wharton said “Back in May we had no idea this was all going to happen.” But with a huge amount of work from Glen, his wife Vicki, their family, coaches, parents and supporters, and with the support of local parish council the centre was renovated and ready to go in October, hundreds of gymnasts are training there already and the Christmas displays were a fitting demonstration of what has been achieved in such a short space of time.
